Michigan Aerospace has designed and fabricated a Bio-Spectral Characterization Instrument (BSI) to measure the spectral signatures and cross sections of biological simulants and agents. The instrument has been delivered to Dugway Proving Ground and is being used by the staff there to support the Joint Biological Standoff Detection System (JBSDS) program.

Bio-Spectral Instrument (BSI) Applications

The BSI can be used for identifying the presence of selected materials in a number of applications, including:

- The food industry

Identifying specific contaminants that may be present at various stages of food processing.

- Law enforcement

Identifying banned and/or dangerous materials at checkpoints or in searches, including:

    - Drugs
    - Explosives
    - Harmful substances
    - Forensics

- Quality control

Checking for purity or specific contaminants in industrial processes.

The Instrument Itself

The BSI is able to provide the following information on samples:

    – Elastic scattering at 3 wavelengths: 355 nm, 106 µm and 1.5 µm
    – Laser-induced fluorescence between 360 nm and 700 nm
    – Optical depth

The sample materials are contained in a bio-level 3 compatible holder capable of handling up to 8 individually-capped cuvettes.

Data acquisition is automatically performed on up to 4 samples in one unattended run.

The data are stored in binary format for archival purposes and spreadsheet-compatible format for processing.

A user-friendly graphical user interface guides the operator through the sample testing process.
